January and February Work

 Our members have been very busy the last couple of months. Below are some of our work.

Kate shows off the textures in her pebble bowl with art yarn from Linda's workshop last year, and added a Dorset button.

 In connection with her art yarn workshop last year, Linda made a video for us: Making a Simple Art Yarn.

Elizabeth used Dorset buttons sewn on to a kumihimo braid for a necklace.

These Yorkshire buttons on a knitted cardigan were also made by Elizabeth.

Linda washed and dyed an old wool blanket and embellished it with merino fibre to produce a warm, hooded coat.

Carla knitted several little coats for dogs.

Wendy has been very busy knitting up her handspun wool.

Wendy also produced her first crocheted top, and added little bobbles which were done in two halves.

Jane has been busy knitting for a baby.

These socks were also knitted by Jane.

Inge knitted sock from her handspun 3-ply yarn.

Madeline knitted a hat for the QMCG, this one in the Bohus technique.

Inge learned sprang online, and produced this hat.

Inge knitted a shawl with her handspun Wensleydale wool.

Carla made this little bunny in needle felting

Laura wove a 'butterfly' rug.

Dorothy made a bottom of stairs rug from her stash.

Inge did a first test with acid dyes.

Fleece Preparation 3 Ways - and some Skirting

At our picnic last month Nicola, Madeline and Inge spoke about ways of dealing with raw fleece. We found that we had worked very differently with our recent fleeces, and we thought it might be interesting to compare these ways in a blog post. There can be many reasons for choosing a particular way of preparing a fleece for spinning. Some reasons for scouring (washing) the fleece that came up were: the quantity of fleece that needs to be prepared within a particular time frame, the space available for washing (a whole fleece as described by Nicola, or small parts of a fleece as described by Madeline and Inge), the quality of the fleece and how clean it is, and the personal preference for one or other way of working. Spindle Spinning Workshop in April 2023

Many people had brought their spindles - some of us had experience, others were learning. Good fun was had by all. Top whorl spindle Madeline presented the workshop with a few tips and tricks, which were much appreciated. She also showed us a couple of possibilities of setting up for plying - to easily remove the singles cob from the spindle, it was suggested that a quill of card was wrapped around the spindle shaft. Shoe boxes and knitting needles come in very handy A very advanced lazy kate Many different types of spindle were in use - mainly suspended spindles, which included a couple of Turkish spindles. Towards the end Laura demonstrated supported spindling. A display of spindles.
